Monday Mix Up #22 w/ James Fava

Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: James Fava
Label: Love That Music
Residencies: Mynt Thursday, Fake Tits @ Tramp Fridays, Cant Say Fridays, The Weekend @ Seven Saturdays
Years in industry: 8
Favourite Catchphrase: 'You don't make friends with salad.'

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

Was having a hard time getting girls and my saxophone was to heavy to carry on the school bus. Discovered Technics 1200 turntables and never looked back. Still working on the girls bit, and stuck wheels on my saxophone case.

First big break, discovered mass texting in 2007 and told all my mates to swing past 'the local' aka Mynt Lounge.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Advice: Practice makes perfect, friends go a long way & watch out for that ego.

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

With out being bias' I would have to say Mynt Lounge, after 5 years it never ceases to amaze me.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Influences hmmmm Definitely Eddie Mac, he is the dj's dj having played with the best all over the globe, not to mention always there to provide a level head and calming advice. Big shout out to Ajax, what a guy and extremely influential when it comes to my music. Last but not least my partner in crime Rob Pix, he introduced me to vodka, zippy share and the Melbourne recovery scene.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

Currently in the studio working on a few remix bits for Say Wat records, also working with Pioneer Pro DJ on a few bits.. watch this space.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

A mash of all things that excite me.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Solo - Congaloid, where is my Hawaiian shirt?

Gig Dates:

Copyright feat. Imaani - Wizeman 2012 Remixes

One of Copyright's biggest tunes gets reworked for 2012, resulting in a tidy two track package fit for today's dancefloor. Sam and Gav take care of the buttons on the 2012 Remix, toughening up the bottom end for main room purposes and layering on analogue synths in abundance, creating a warm and sumptuous place for Imaani's vocal to rest. The Layabouts deliver a deeper, more pensive cut, laced with lightly shuffling drums and punchy synths.

Acid Jack - The Sword EP

"Teenage Riot Records presents "The Sword EP" by Acid Jack! The Melbourne Techno Wizard, as he has been deemed by Bird Peterson, returns once again with a seriously nasty collection of bangers. The title track is a filthy epic homage to the masters and the classics with remixes by Toronto's St Mandrew (who delivers some healthy acid hotness), Paris's Donovans (who bring us a more classic house spin on it), and Berlin's Fat And Ugly (who drop kicks this sucker into a whole new realm of bass)."

Mankinde - Hipster Doofus EP

Was lucky enough to see Mankinde's alter ego play a club gig last month in Melbourne; safe to say no asses were on couches when he dropped an absolute Cosmo bomb!

Burnt Toast // Sunday Labour Day Eve // MGMC Interview

Writer: Kid's Table

DJ Name: MGMC - band members: Matty Grant, Matthew Charles and Amy Young
Residencies: Numerous parties/festivals and club gigs all over Victoria, Interstate and abroad.
Years in industry: 10-12 years between us
Favourite catch phrase: I got hoes in different area codes.

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

We all had our own musical backgrounds and after doing numerous gigs together we decided to form MGMC just under 2 years ago. Hard to explain our big break as we were and still are extremely successful individually. To date our big break probably came last year playing a heap of the summer festivals, and also numerous international gigs including New Caledonia and Asia.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Be patient and have a lot of persistence, keep a good head on your shoulders and never get caught up in industry politics, always be yourself!

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

Too many to choose from, stand out gigs to date have been; Dayglow festival, Supafest 2011, Hot BBQ 2011 and Pop Light New Caledonia.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Friends, family and an awesome support crew.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

We are currently in the middle of making our first release; 'Falling Under'. Really looking forward to finishing this and playing it out.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

Hot, sweaty, fist pumping, lots of alcohol and hands in the air booty shakin' big room beats with killer vocals!

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Has to be 'kokomo' by The Beach Boys, ultimate tropical song.

Gig Dates:

Sunday March 10 - Toast Nightclub, Geelong.
Saturday March 24 - Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project, Melbourne.
Friday April 27 - Jupiters pool party, Jupiters Casino, Gold Coast.
