We got it off urbandictionary.com actually. We just needed a name real quick and used the first thing we were happy with, I can't even really remember why we chose Baby Goggles, but it stuck. It's the term for parents who no matter how ugly their baby is they still think it's cute. Which is basically what Luke's mum would of had to have to not throw him off a bridge when he was born.
KT: How did you come to working together/start deejayin'?
We went to Primary School together, then high school then Luke started a course and after about 2 weeks of hating year 11 I joined him. We started to get introduced to dance music shortly after by a now close friend of ours Braiden Valenzise (we love you Vee). We started downloading dance music and sharing it with each other on the train up to Melbourne for our course. Not long after Luke bought this little Numark piece of crap that played music off an iPod. We started using that at local birthdays and deb after parties and sort of grew a bit of a following amongst the local scene although we didn't mix on break or even beat match at all times and we just played whatever track we were feeling at the time and didn't pay much attention to set structure or crowd momentum which is something we really try to focus on now. We eventually got booked by our homie Moluck from 1 Fish, Two Fish for a Nash gig and then our boy Yuen hooked us up and taught us the ropes and we've just been working together and playing all sorts of gigs and doing a little bit of production since then.
KT: What has been your favourite gig so far?
We have a few favourite gigs that we have done. Luke's birthday last week at Fake Chow was pretty dope because about 20 minutes into our set everyone just started going mental and that carried through the rest of the set, even when Dylan ejected the track that was playing. Our warm up set for Stafford Brothers was a lot of fun too, it's very pleasing playing tracks we really like to a relatively commercial crowd and getting a good response, we like people having an open mind to more underground music and actually listening to it before they judge it.
KT: What can people expect to hear form one of your sets?
People can expect to hear a lot of house, tech haus and UK garage influences and maybe some Detroit techno and deeper sort of stuff depending on the set time and the gig. We play a lot of remixes and edits of Hip Hop tracks and tracks with catchy vocal hooks because it's hard to keep our local scene interested for a whole set without playing stuff they are familiar with, which is sort of annoying but it means we always have to keep some focus on playing to the crowd which adds another element to our set preparation.
KT: Who's your favourite DJ/Producer at the moment?
We are really digging a lot of Daniel Steinberg's stuff, bouncy tech house and off beat basslines done the right way. Oliver $ is another guy who we had the pleasure of supporting not long ago and we absolutely loved his set at the Nash so much we went to see him at Revolver a few weeks after and then caught his secret set at Circus right after that. His production is super tight and always gets crowds moving. Anything from J. Phlip, B-Ju, Worthy, Julio Bashmore and the rest of the Dirtybird and Future Boogie crews. Also been getting into some Maceo Plex and Cravach when we are going deeper.
KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical'?
The first track we think of is your 'Git Sarm Whistle Hunny' Bootleg of Rattle by Bingo Players. We have been known to drop that when the crowd is gagging for something a bit heavier.
KT: If you had one special power what would it be and why?
We already have the ability to pass girls urge to sleep with one of us on to one another. Also known as Babygoggling. If we were to have another super power it would probably be that flashy thing from Men In Black so if we ever fuck up a mix or something doesn't go to plan we can just flash everyone and redo it over and over until we get it right.
KT: What plans do you have for Baby Goggles in the future?
You can expect to hear a few more mix tapes getting pushed through our Soundcloud and some more original stuff as well as edits and remixes. We are starting to do more edits of tracks we like to make them more DJ friendly. We also have a few little collaboration ideas lined up with some local dudes like Galtier and a local drum machine extraordinaire which will be a bit left of centre hopefully. They will be focused more on House and some UK sounds. Collaborating seems like the way to go at the moment because it shows us production techniques we don't really look at when just doing our own thing.
KT: What's your favourite memory of a live gig you've seen?
Oliver $ @ Revolver
Pleasurekraft @ The Nash
Claude VonStroke @ Summadayze 2011
Monkey Safari @ The Nash
Diplo @ Parklife 2011
James Zabiela @ Brown Alley
KT: To all the promoters out there; why should they book you?
Promoters should book us because we have lots of fun playing, listening to and entertaining people with dance music and if we are having fun with the crowd usually follows us.
