Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: Rob Pix
Label: Ministry of Sound Australia, Downright, Vicious, Neon Records
Residencies: Mynt Thursday (Werribee), After Dark Social Club @ Roxannes (Melbourne), Apple (Adelaide), Soho (Sydney), Platinum (Gold Coast)
Years in the industry: 8
Favourite catch phrase: LET EM KNOW!

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

Rob Pix: I guess I was just really into dance music (late 90's early 2000's house), bought a pair of technic 1200's and started collecting records... YES.. RECORDS! My 'Big break' or my first big gig was when I got to play to a crowd of about 2000 teens when I was 17, it was pretty crazy!

KT: What advice can you give to aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Rob Pix: My advice... produce music! Be an individual and really put 110% into learning how to produce and write music.. it's fun and it goes hand in hand with djing.

If you're not into that side of it, run a few parties or put on a regular night.. it will help punters get familiar with your name and will help develop your skills as a whole in the music industry.

KT: What had been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

Rob Pix: The Met in Brisbane for my Ministry of Sound EHS tour was awesome, it had an amazing vibe and it was wall to wall! All my residencies are my favourite gigs and festivals are always heaps of fun to play.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Andy Van from Vicious & Vandalism has been my mentor and big influence for a while now.. along with John Course those guys pretty much started this shizz in Australia! Internationally, Erick Morillo. He has so much energy when he plays and has remained at the top of his game for almost 20 years!

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

Rob Pix: Just finished remixes for The Only, Teki Latex &Funkin' Matt and for a young female pop artist names Elen Levon. Also my new original bits coming out soon on Downright & Ministry of Sound.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

Rob Pix: Lots of my own edits, productions, remixes, vodka and good times.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Rob Pix: DJ Gregory - 'Tropical Soundclash'
