Tropical Tunesday #9

Jesus may or may not have loved you before this long weekend but after all the antics that have gone down there is no doubt about how he feels now. (I cannot actually speak on behalf of Jesus, Baby Jesus or pre-teen Jesus).

He are some post worthy choooons that sound tracked my weekend:

One of the highlights of amazing artists I saw over my Easter were Act Yo Age (Southern Fried/Sweat It Out) at Festivus. They played one of the sexiest house/tech/dub building sets I've ever seen. These guys definitely know how to work a crowd and work it they did!

CROOKERS ROYAL T ( ACT YO AGE GET OUTTA BED MIX ) PREVIEW by ACTYOAGE

Another highlight for me was ex-geetroitian sinful party maker Malakai. He pulled out some amazing tracks that many of us hadn't heard before and showed that there is still hope out there for non-commercial music with punters in Geetroit.

Plan Your Easter: The Resurrection

Guest Writer: Le Chook

I can feel it down in my plums, the resurrection is coming. Although the light may only be shining briefly over this town next weekend, it’s going to be bright as hell.

Firstly if anyone is in the dark about next weekend, still trapped in their tombs waiting for someone to move some big ass rock, some of the happenings of next weekend are as follows:

Thursday:

Easter Sunday:

Festivus @ Carlton Hotel (Children Collide, Little Red, Bag Raiders, Muscles, Ajax, Vasco Era + more)
We Make Party @ Eureka (TRek, Naysayer & Gilsun, Sleeves vs. 1928)
Official Festivus Afterparty @ The Nash (Ok Sure, Mat Cant)

Easter Monday:

Free Range @ Barwon Heads Pub (Many Amazing Locals)

ADD TO THAT YOU ALL GET TUESDAY OFF TO RECOVER & PLAY TWO UP!

Now it would be safe to assume that everyone is going to go out for probably 2-3 of these days minimum and if you subscribe to this
Getting Tropical you will more then likely be smashing all 5 followed by a Pot & Parmi at your local RSL on Tuesday.

So now we know all of Town will be packed with a lot of people with drunken smiles on their wee faces, having a good time, going to see/hear a lot of music and generally being enthusiastic all weekend long. As much as seeing this makes me really happy, it also shits me to tears. Because we all know the next week 80% of these people will go back to being a sour puss and saying those same two words ‘Geelong’s Shit’. Well I’ve got news for you buddy: ‘You’re Shit!’. (Note that there are always exceptions to every rule, for example some people may not be in fact ‘shit’, they may have just been born with absolutely no scrotum/soul/joy in their lives etc.) This lot needs to realise that amazing events happen nearly every other weekend, and for some fucked reason only 30 people turn up, all of whom have a killer time. From that you would have to assume the problem isn’t with the event, it’s probably with attitude of a large part of the community to local music.

Rants aside, you will notice that ¾ of the acts playing over this colossal weekend are local, so turn up early or listen to someone in a side-room for 15 minutes you might even enjoy yourself. And if you do, check out another show with some of these acts without a big name headliner. Who knows? One day you may even start heading out fortnightly to see some live music and having a really good time.

In summary it’s an amazing weekend, go out have a great time, hear some music, get a smile on your face and for fucks sake keep it on for years to come.

Can You Handle The 'Truth'?

Guest Writer: One Man Wolf

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that when you all hear the word 'Dubstep', most of you aren't gonna smack the person beside you on the shoulder and say "Hey BRO, you know what country makes GREAT dubstep?! NEW ZEALAND!", and that's cool, because your friend is merely going to shoot you a confused look, and maybe even (god forbid) try to show you the latest sick 'dubstep' drop Britney's thrown into her new pile of noise.

Now INSTEAD of taking the easy route and merely knocking the fucker out, I'm here to suggest an alternative. Now don't get me wrong, by all means, they deserve it; but in the end does violence solve anything? Perhaps, but before resulting to physical conflict, why not give 'em a dose of the Truth?

Production 3-piece Truth, are without a shadow of a doubt the hottest dubstep producers to come out of New Zealand in my recent memory, and I'm willing to throw my reputation and standing in the community on the line and say they're probably the biggest and best in the country's history. Bursting onto the scene mid-last year, Truth started making big waves in the dubstep community with their debut album 'Puppets' released on the label 'Aquatic Lab', and they haven't looked back since.

Rather than try to explain their sound to you myself, I'll let them do the talking:

The album delves into the deeper darker side of dubstep, it definitely has a moodly slightly cinematic element to it. We have always intended to stay true to the original foundations of dubstep, taking inspiration from some of the pioneers such as Loefah and Mala. - Truth

Having listened to the album countless times, I think that sums it up perfectly. These days it seems like some dubstep 'producers' merely throw a bunch of drums and chainsaw synths together in no particular order and throw it out to the public with crossed fingers, hoping for the best; whereas the boys from Truth have taken the genre, stripped it down to its roots, created a bunch of simple; yet masterful tracks and basically and 'this is our style, this is who we are, take it or leave it'.

Take it? Leave it? You decide!

Major Lazer Cartoon..!

Thanks to InTheMix & Larrie for tipping me off on this one!

What with his frequent attacks on M.I.A., repping smartphones in viral videos and working with everyone fromTiesto to Snoop Dogg and Black Eyed Peas, it’s clear that US producer Diplo has a seriously full plate. That dish just got a bit bigger though, with news now out that Major Lazer, the mutant dancehall outfit formed with regular collaboratorSwitch, is getting a TV adaptation.
As reported by Pitchfork, Diplo and Switch’s laser wielding mascot will star in an animated TV series on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block of programming – famous for shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021 and Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Good Job! – with each episode clocking in at 15 minutes in length.
No air date has been confirmed but we trust there’ll be all the off the wall antics and far out freakery of past Major Lazer music videos and plenty of damn daggering.

I know I certainly can't wait for this to drop; make sure there's room on your IQ because this is one season pass you must have!

"Hey Man! I Love Dubstep"

Guest Writer: Darcy Johnson

“Hey man I love Dubstep!”
“Oh yeah, who are you listening to?”
“Excision, Skrillex, hey have you heard sweet shop? Such a tune!”
Let’s stop right there.

Rewind 3 years, when I was first introduced to Dubstep through the Fabric.37 mix by heavyweights Caspa and Rusko.
This was a simpler time, a time when a 140bpm or 70bmp for the halftime tunes, and a wobble bass pretty much personified the genre.
Freshly evolved from the realms of Drum and Bass and Garage, experimental producers were playing around with a sound that was gaining momentum in the UK, yet was virtually unheard of in Australia.
A Youtube search would return 100 or so results from the keyword Dubstep, and most videos had less than ten thousand views.
Putting it on at a party would clear a room, and I even remember having an argument with someone about the fact that Dubstep was not a dance move, but a musical genre that she would soon be very aware of.

Just last month I missed out on a potentially awesome gig, when Digital Mystikz (Mala & Coki) played at Brown Alley for “City of Lost Children”.
Why did I miss this gig you may ask?
Because Dubstep is the new craze, and the event sold out!
Every hipster and his Fixie is all over it like shit on Velcro.
If you asked half the punters there that night to name one track produced by Digital Mystiks, or either of the pair individually, you would most likely have drawn blank stares.

I am of course, what you may already have guessed, one of the elitist pricks who talks like he knows everything about the genre.
Now just because I was there when these gigs had 50 people in a shitty bar in Fitzroy, before they were selling 1000+ tickets for shows like this, doesn’t mean I am some sort of guru on the subject. But what it does entitle me to, is a decent opinion on the state of the genre, and it’s subsequent followers of late.
And frankly, it’s fucked.

Unfortunately due to the way the world works, talent is not everything.
A good PR team, or fame of a certain variety, will always trump the genius in his bedroom.  Or even in this case, a massive producer in his or her own country, who has massive respect amongst the devoted followers, doesn’t get a gig, because your average sock dodging, jeans rolling, non prescription glasses wearing, ticket purchasing, asshole doesn’t know who you are.

Being from all four sides of the equation (producer, DJ, promoter and punter) I see and hear a lot of music.
I search out new artists almost every day.
And sadly most of them you will never see unless you go to the UK.
Why?
Because your average person has a one sided view of Dubstep at the moment, a sound pushed by the likes of Borgore, Doctor P, Skrillex and co. which represents a sensibility of trying to out do each other in the cringe factor.
And I don’t mean cringe factor as in how bad it is, I mean in terms of how bad it sounds, each trying to have a dirtier or filthier sound than the next.
Disregarding any notion of musical ability in the process, until we end up with a catalogue of interchangeable nonsense, that more represents the sound of Transformers fucking in a swamp than music. (With a snare on the third for good measure)

If you want to hear real Dubstep, pull your head out of the gutter and look for some real talent, because there is heaps out there.
And if not, Dubstep will go the way of Drum and Bass and turn into an oversaturated genre with more jokes than talent.

Creamfields. Do you need a reason..? Umek

For a long time, Slovenia is known for its great electronic parties, but as the local scene is of boutique dimensions, everyone, who wishes to take the art of mixing and producing to a professional level, has to go out there and enter the worldwide scene. Umek has done this step as early as the middle of the 90s and so he became one of the most important techno players of the global techno scene, even before the end of the last millennium.

Together with people, who share the same views, he successfully captured the first era of researching and recreating the rules of the dance music in Recycled Loops, Consumer Recreation and Astrodisco platforms, which all put the sound of the Slovenian techno on the world map of electronic music.

2010 was an exceptional year for the Slovenian artist and 1605 record label boss Umek. Widely regarded as one of the most influential players in the global techno scene and a true pioneer of forward thinking electronic music, it was a year that saw him pack out the biggest clubs and land numerous download chart topping releases including 'Back In The Race' and 'OMGWTF'.

Here's his newest EP entitled 'Original Challenge with Tomy DeClerque. If you don't want to go and see him at Creamfields after listening to this.. well.. your crazy!

Umek vs Tomy DeClerque - Original Challenge EP by Umek

#1 That's Done It (Original Club Mix) - Mike Spaccavento

Label: Toolroom Records

Genre: Techno

Wow. Just wow. This has got to be one of the best if not the best techno track of the past year. Released on Toolroom Records and feature in Umek's recent Toolroom Knights mix, the track offers amazing builds with even better drops, with a bassline only a fool would hate. Get on it!

#2 My Room Sucks (Original Mix) - Luca Terzini, Mollo, Microcheep

Label: Substudio Records

Genre: Minimal

Love this track. The bassline is absolute heaven even though it's so generically minimal. The percussion is so catchy and wild which really makes this track so solid. The vocals are the icing on the cake. Definitely a must have for minimal lovers!

#3 My Oscar (Original Mix) - Alex Kenji

Label: Toolroom Records

Genre: Tech House

After so many massive tech house and house originals and remixes, this guy really needs no introduction. Alex Kenji has done it again with 'My Oscar' a tech house track released on Toolroom Records. A gallopy bassline and what's best described as a 'wowing' stretching synth not hold this track together, making it so damn good.

#4 Danceflood (Original Mix) - Sebastien Leger, Uto Karem

Label: Mistakes Music

Genre: Techno

These two great producers have made a funky techno bomb here. Put together with an assortment of chopped vocals, cleverly placed high hats along with other percussion hits, and most significantly an up and down funked out bassline that gets your body moving.

Tropical Tunesday #6

Yeah so it's been a pretty quiet week/month for music at the moment but one good thing that has come out of it is Justice's new choon so here it is amongst a couple of other rad tracks.

Civilization - Justice

Break Your Body (Original Mix) - Brazzabelle

This Is (Original Mix) - White Heat

Drugs In My Body (VOGELSPAND Remix) - Thieves Like Us

Creamfields. Do you need a reason..? Round Table Knights

The Round Table Knights are a DJ/Producer duo consisting of Questionmark and Biru Bee. If you had to choose one single word to characterise them it could only be 'diversity' (no not an old, old wooden ship used during the civil war era). The RTK play all kinds of electronic/acoustic/futuristic/exciting/sexy/nipple twisting music.

"It's all about the mix" they say. Since 2002 they have been throwing parties all over Switzerland and inviting guests from different musical genres. They hosted and played alongside: TTC, Beastie Boys, Holy Ghost!, Spank Rock, Coco Rosie, Justice as well as Modeselektor, Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax, M.I.A., Crookers and Poni Hoak, just to mention a few.

They have successfully released two mix CDs, a limited 7", a Remix 12" and in 2008 they put out their first EP "Hold Me Back". Their remixes for Crookers, Radioclit, El Guincho, Bonaparte and Gameboy/Gamegirl get supported by Brodinski, Sinden, Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1), Digitalism, Diplo, Shir Kahn and many more. Constantly releasing remixes and new productions, you just can't miss the Round Table Knights wherever you get the chance to see them!

With their debut album on the way here is a remix of ' Say What?!' from Melbournian Mat Cant and their orignal mix of 'Cat Power'.

Cat Power by Round Table Knights

Remember you can still enter to win 1 of 2 double passes to Creamfields Melbourne! Check out how you can be Getting Tropical and go in the running here!
