Monday Mix Up #13 w/ Josh Symons

Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: Josh Symons
Residencies: Faux Love/Kick It, Cuda Bar, Touch me, I'm Sick
Years in industry: 1-2

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

I first started playing when a friend sold me his old Pioneer CDJ 200's and a basic mixer. I never really set out to be a 'DJ' I just loved playing around with my friends pretending I knew what I was doing! Then after a year of playing in my bedroom a good friend asked me to play an early set at one of his nights at Circus Night Club (Melbourne). After that gig the guys at Kick It asked me to play a few gigs, within a month I'd supported the likes of Yolanda Be Cool, Bag Raiders and Sampology.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Wait until you're ready to play a club, and do it because you enjoy it. There's too many douches on the scene that only play because it's the 'cool' thing to do. They can't beat match, they get gigs on ticket selling merit, and they always seem to brand themselves under a shit random name :/ - Oh, and stay in school.

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

My favourite gig would have to be when I supported Yolanda Be Cool at Blue Martini. It was my second ever club gig and I got to play right before them, it was also the first time I'd ever played to a large crowd which is very memorable!

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Ajax/Monkey Safari. The way Ajax chooses and plays songs is somethign any DJ can learn from, in a party set context of course. Then at the same time I've always appreciated the way a good house artist like Monkey Safari can build a set.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

After putting together this mix for the Pleasurekraft gig I'm just focusing on preparing for the busy schedule that comes with the summer season. Nights like Fake Chow Saturdays, Cuda Bar and Touch Me, I'm Sick I'm really looking forward to.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

Depending on where I can play they can expect to hear anything from old school RNB to 90s trance anthems (not really), but I do like to mix it up depending on the venue and the crowd. If I'm playing a normal club set I like to play main room house with some party songs. I like to utilise 3 decks, using samples and playing songs for what I feel is just the right amount of time. Then in the right context I like to play tech-house and techno.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Bibio - Lovers Carvings (Catz and Dogz edit). Deep house at it's best too by the way.

October Fantastic Four

Guest Writer: Steve Camp

#1 Oversexed (Original Mix) - Format B Download

Genre: Tech House

Label: Formatik

Format B releases this tech haus bomb on his very own label 'Formatik'. This track has so much essence to it, driven heavily by chopped vocal samples, huge energetic drops and a tasty techy bassline.

#2 Double Trouble (Original Mix) - Louie Cut, Avrosse Download

Genre: Minimal

Label: Strict Recordings

Two of the best current minimal artists out there have joined forces to make this amazing production. They deliver a grainier tech housey bassline to what they normally put out, yet still manage to give us such a sweet sound, complimented by a catchy percussion driven melody.

#3 Say Goodnight To The Bad Guy (Original Mix) - Avrosse Download

Genre: Minimal

Label: Bosphorus Underground Recordings

Everyone loves Scarface. These sneaky chopped up vocals seem to really work and the drop is so sweet. Sticking to a basic minimalistic bassline and poppy percussion sounds, Avrosse gives us another amazing banger.

#4 Noti Verisi (Original Mix) - Do Santos Download

Genre: House

Label: Hotfingers

Some chilled tech house never fails. Reverbed female vocals and a consistent house synth make for a nice deep housey vibe. Definitely a must have if you're working a lounge.

Tropical Tunesday #32

Writer: Kid's Table

Jesse Rose tops this weeks Tunesday post with a tight colab with Hotchip called 'Forget My Name' - after one listen it's already embedded in my head. Followed by a dope release from MTP, another house anthem from the man Oliver $ and a T-Rek treat. Enjoy.

Monday Mix Up #12 w/ Totem

Interview: Kid's Table

KT: How did you come to start DJing?

Started deejaying around 4 years ago when a slot cam up Wednesday/Friday nights at the Bridge Hotel. I've slowly manifested my love for music into a position where I'm able to play the stuff I dig for people.

KT: What has been your favourite gig so far?

Easily Yolanda Be Cool playing at the Bridge Hotel. It was such a raucous free for all night that ended in absolute chaos.

KT: What can people expect to hear from one of your sets?

Anything and everything. I have tried to stick to some sort of set plan in the past when playing for certain crowds but I always end up just pulling CD's out of my waller and playing what I feel. To be honest, a lot of the time I don't even know what's going to happen when I play.

KT: Who's your favourite DJ/producer at the moment?

So much good music getting around at the moment! Definitely a lot of the stuff coming out of Bristol such as Waifs & Strays, Eats Everything, Coat of Arms and Julio Bashmore. Also anything released by Marble music, I have a real affinity for the French future bass sound.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Definitely Douster's remix of Yolanda Be Cool's 'Afro Nuts'.

KT: If you had one special power what would it be and why?

The ability to bend time!

KT: What plans do you have for Totem in the future?

To keep on producing and playing until I have to some day grow up. Currently readying several originals and a couple of remixes that I hope to be uploading in the near future. Begin to push further into Melbourne for regular gigs.

KT: What's your favourite memory of a live gig you've seen?

1. Tiefschwarz 6 hour set - Watergate, Berlin. Most attention-grabbing set I've witnessed. Tiefschwarz played after Rampa & Re.You from 6am through to 12pm and it was absolutely relentless. So impressive.

2. Wolf & Lamb vs. Soul Clap playing all night at Trouw nightclub Amsterdam queens day festival weekend. So impressive and completely changed my opinion of sub 120bpm dance music.

3. Eric Prydz (playing after Don Diablo & Michael Woods) in a random high school gym in Budapest, Hungary.

KT: To all the promoters out there; why should they book you?

I feel as through I can play to most crowds quiet well, and am quite adaptable. I always have fun, and am at home on a packed dance floor early in the morning!

Tropical Tunesday #31

Writer: Kid's Table

Top of Tropical Tunesday this week is a bootleg by Benson. His booty/remix of ZDS's 'The Brain' is really simple and effective and one that I really hope to see him drop at Touch Me, I'm Sick presents: Pleasurekraft (USA) @ The Nash coming up on Friday November 4th.

Zombie Disco Squad - Bang Our Mixtape

Writer: Kid's Table

Zombie Disco Squad drop a new mixtape in the name of their re-release and re-worked single; 'We Should Bang Tonight'. Was a personal favourite of mine to drop last summer and with their new take and rad line of remixes the ZDS boys are certainly back in full swing. With a deeper and dirtier moody techno beat the drop is one that will be heard all over again this season. Their new tape follows with the swag that you could only expect from the London duo.

Don't Look Down Now (Roman Fluegel Remix) - Anthony Collins

This is Anthony Collins' fourth release on Curle already, if we don't count the Nina Kraviz & Los Updates remix EP from last year. The surprise on this release is without a doubt the remix from Roman Flügel (Robert Johnson, Playhouse, Dial). We never thought we were going to write this one day about a Curle release, but this my friends, is going to be a summer anthem

Tric Trac (Original Mix) - Worthy, Eats Everything

While we were sleeping our friend Worthy has put out a whopping 27 releases on his Anabatic imprint just down the street and every once in a while I find myself in a conversation with him about a new record we both want to sign! Good thing we are friends and it always works out for the best as it has in this case. Worthy has teamed up with a newcomer named Eats Everything who has simply popped on the scene and started dropping bombs left and right. Eats debuted on Catz n Dogz great label, "Pets" a couple months ago with a fantastic debut single and is all set up for an incredible year in multiple genres. On this record Worthy and Eats collab on a gigantic breakbeat / old skool electro influenced monster. I know we all want to pretend we play 3 hour deep sets at 120 bpm these days but when you get in the big room often times you need some firepower. This one easily fits in with house and has rocked all the big rooms for me this summer. Sometimes we go deep and sometimes we go big and this is definately BIG!

Monday Mix Up #11 w/ Ok Sure

Interview: Kid's Table

KT: First up; what's your DJ name and how did you get/choose it?

Well my DJ name was originally Kaysh and that is just shortened version of my name Akaysha, now I also work under Ok Sure which phonetically sounds like Akaysha.

KT: How did you come to start DJing?

Like most people, just started buying tunes and playing them in my room...

KT: What has been your favourite gig so far?

I had heaps of fun at the Halloween show where I played as Ok Sure for the second time, was lots of fun dressing up and playing live. You always get more into it when you're in character.

KT: What can people expect to hear from one of your sets?

The Kaysh stuff is more Tech-Haus while the Ok Sure shows are pretty varied in genre, anything from slow ambient atmospheric sounds to tough glitchy electro.

KT: Who's your favourite DJ/producer at the moment?

Ah too many! But a few I've been listening to a lot lately are Mungolian Jetset, Four Tet and I just discovered TOKiMONSTA.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Anything by El Guincho, makes me wanna drink pina coladas!

KT: If you had one special power what would it be and why?

Manipulate time, think of the possibilities..

KT: What plans do you have for Kaysh/Ok Sure in the future?

Get back into Djing under Kaysh, haven't played in a while but I have a show coming up on the 4th of November at the Nash supporting Pleasurekraft, also get more live shows for Ok Sure and just keep making new music and getting it out there!

KT: What's your favourite memory of a live gig you've seen?

I think one of my favourite shows I've seen was Soulwax a few years ago at the Palace, I can't really remember what happened but I know it was good. Also M.I.A.'s side show earlier this year was awesome too, I know a lot of people were paying out her BDO gig but I thought she was fantastic.

KT: To all the promoters out there; why should they book you?

Because there aren't many live female electronic acts and it would be good to promote something a bit different instead of the same old boys club..

Javier Logares - Silicon Drift + Remixes

Javier Logares brings Silicon Drift; a mix of minimal, house and techno, that inspires a journey to the beyond within. With stellar remixes from Dapayk & Roman Flügel, Silicon Drift is sure to gather heavy rotation from the most respected names in the industry.
Javier Logares’ ‘Silicon Drift’ is spontaneous action coupled with planned execution. We begin the mix with just a Kick and beep; reminiscent of the days when minimal ruled, and Bar25 was still a secret love affair of Berliners. Back to the basics: the bass line hammers out a groove while the percussion rises. Edgy, crispy, and punchy; the drift takes us further to the boundaries of our expectations, and delivers an injection of silicon directly into our brain. This scene seems somewhat familiar; maybe we’ve been here before? Just once, in a late night escapade into the warm damp world of minimal, or was it tech house? We can’t decide, welcome home.
And now we enter the world of Roman Flügel, straight out of the gate, a catchy melodic rhythm catches our attention and begs us further. We begin to move, as the claps appear and hi hats rise, the procedure is nearly complete. After the break, it’s over, we are in. Everyone is hypnotized. If Roman Flügel’s goal was to get every body on the same plane, the same groove, he has succeeded here with devious elegance. We are ever so attentive of the playful lead as it swallows our mind, while the rhythm takes hold of our body. The track pushes on only to bring more surprises and take our travels deeper into the dark obscurity of night. This track will take the audience by storm, we will be hearing this years to come.
Dapayk brings us a very tech house version of Silicon drift. Starting with strings on high, we fall into the pit with a dark bass and a crispy pluck. Like a train we steam on; pressure builds. We break through with a cascade of percussion over hollow chords. The rhythm is strong, aggressive and moving. The chords rise higher, the train is in full motion and the bass drops to a spectacular corner of the galaxy known as the Silicon Drift. Dapayks remix is not for the faint of heart, full of power, meant for serious movement.
