Monday Mix Up #25 w/ Jacob Malmo

Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: Jacob Malmo
Residencies: Saint Friday and Sundays, Revolver Fridays, Mockingbird Saturdays, Guilty Sundays @ Pretty Please, Likes of you, Mama Said.
Years in industry: 4
Favourite Catchphrase: Don't take life too seriously.

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

Originally starting as a bedroom DJ, my first club gig like many local guys I know was at Korova. After a year or so at scratching at the base of the scene with gigs here and there, I grew close to a few senior guys who introduced me into the Likes of You. I hope that is not my big break but playing those strong gigs definitely attributed to respect and more international support.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Don't do what everyone else is doing. I look at club nights now and think it's all the same thing. There are to many up and coming grovellers that crowd that scene being wannabe DJs.. Change it up and stand out from the norm.

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

Revolver stands out by a long shot. People are up for anything and it's somewhere I always loved as a punter. Warming up for Pleasurekraft last year there would have to be a highlight.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Locally I would have to guys like Mic Newman, Luke Mcd and Mike Buhl for opening my mind to music in a broader scale. I was only a country kid with a top 40 mentality when I moved from home.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

I run MAMA SAID with Oliver James and Daniel Tardrew. We are definitely looking at running a lot more monthly parties showcasing the more underground side of music. We have our 2nd birthday coming up on May 11 with a 12 hour party at Killing Time and Revolver. It will defintely be a doozy!

Not a great lot production wise but its something I am starting to really feel and am excited to see what's to come in the next year or so.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

A good ability to read the crowd and take them where they want to go with an eclectic brand of house music. I want to convey sex and party through the same sound.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Honestly one tune popped straight in.

Joris Voorn - Beach Kisses

Definitely a classic tune that takes you away to another place. It appeals to everyone and works well later in the night.

Upcoming gigs:

Saint Friday and Sunday
Mockingbird Saturdays
Guilty Sundays @ Pretty Please
May 11th Mama Said 2nd birthday @ Killing Time and Revolver
May 18th Electric Owl - Rober Babicz, Luszine, Nadja Lind, Klartraum
July 30th - Aug 8th - Thailand Tour - Everybody events

Jamie Jones feat. Art Department - Our Time in Liberty EP

With the wait almost over for Jamie Jones’ second artist album ‘Tracks From The Crypt’ Crosstown Rebels get set to drop the absolutely massive single ‘Our Time In Liberty’ featuring cult dance outfit Art Department. A bassline symphony for the senses, this elusive slayer of dancefloors, is finally getting a release alongside a heavy-duty remix from comrade Russ Yallop.
Jamie Jones has had a monumental impact on the underground house scene for this generation and out in June ‘Tracks From The Crypt’ - a collection of tracks that Jamie has created over the past few years – will epitomize the producers’ influential sound and include highly-anticipated unreleased tracks such as‘Paradise’ and ‘Frequencies’. Now Jamie Jones is synonymous with Hot Creations, the label he started in 2010 with Lee Foss and currently one of the biggest underground labels in the world, but this release signifies a return to the artist sound that brought Jamie Jones to superstar status as a DJ and innovator.
The original ‘Our Time In Liberty’ is already a huge record without even seeing an official release, amassing thousands of views on youtube and carrying the full force of that old school Jamie Jones bassline hook on a progressive twisted trip.
The ever haunting, distinctive vocals of Kenny Glasgow and the synth stabs and bass hydraulics combined – make ‘Our Time In Liberty’ a sheer sonic force to be reckoned with.
Vocalist Kenny Glasgow and No.19 boss Jonny White aka Art Department had a meteoric rise in 2011 when they unleashed ‘Without You’ – one of the biggest bombs hit the underground that year followed by killer debut LP ‘The Drawing Board’ on Crosstown Rebels. One of the Toronto scene’s finest exports, Art Department have created a sound that is burned on the collective memory.
Next up on the release, another member of the nu-school brigade Russ Yallop makes a welcome return to the mothership Crosstown, delivering a tougher, more upfront absolutely huge remix with heavy bass punching through the warped melody, soaring synths and sinister FX and a UK underground vibe. A heavy hitter remix that compliments the original and creates one hell of a single… boom!!!

Maceo Plex - Frisky EP

Just in time to join in another Miami attack by the Rebels crew, Maceo Plex delivers two prime cuts, showcasing his undeniable gift for seductive grooves. Aptly named 'Frisky', Maceo is clearly gearing up for the party/mating season with this next installment on Crosstown Rebels.

Title track 'Frisky' has all the flair of a Maceo floor burner, destined to warm bodies as the night draws in and set the mood for fun and friskiness. With a sprinkling of classic Maceo dust over the mid-tempo chugging groove, the bassline rumbles below that well renowned funk and there's no doubt Maceo's reign over slinky hypnotic house is set to continue.

Continuing in the smokey house vein but lifting the tempo for the later crowd, 'Sex Appeal' is another ode to the fairer members of the species and injects a little romance into the more bumping slice of Maceo gold on offer here. A dose of acid and a breakdown and slow build of shooting synths until the melodic bassline drop is sure to raise the roof (terrace).

There's no question that Eric Estonel aka Maceo Plex is one of the most in-demand figures in dance music. Finding a balance between a hectic touring and production schedule Eric hides out at his tranquil base in Valencia, Spain but when it comes to the business -- Maceo just keeps bringing it and his bag of soul-filled grooves to the party --notching up fans across the board, from BBC Radio 1 DJs to DC10 revelers. As well as keeping up the success of his flourishing Ellum Audio imprint, a highly anticipated second artist album is due out on Crosstown Rebels in the autumn.

Justin Martin - Ghettos & Gardens

"Ghettos & Gardens" is the first single from Justin Martin's debut artist album on dirtybird. The title describes the way this track rises up with beautiful sweeping melodies, almost to the point where you want to kiss the person next to you. But this epic euphoria can only last so long - it peaks with a bassline so tough, it'll push you down a staircase, and then steal your bus pass.

"Hood Rich" starts with a cascade of voices tumbling over each other, clamoring for attention on the way to the club. Those bold proclamations give way to the melodious tones of a string ensemble that would be welcome in Yo-Yo Ma’s living room. And that’s just the first minute. All niceties aside, a hive of bass bees smashes against the far wall and explodes, leaving no doubt that every booty will be dropping like DAMN.

Monday Mix Up #23 w/ Stevie Mink

Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: Stevie Mink

Label: CR2 (UK), Boo Records, Suckmusic, Say Wat
Residencies: Orange Whip, Wah Wah, Tramp
Years in industry: 3
Favourite Catchphrase: We Don't Bullshit

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

1st big break was doing a remix for T-Rek on his no.1 Aria Club hit 'Out My Bitch'. Started in my late years in high school collecting records (in its last year) played around on my pc with some software and learnt the ropes.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Be good with computers. It's a fast pace age where now a DJ is required to be like a band where you have to have either your own songs/remixes or bootlegs. With blogs and soundclouds and social media the main thing these days. You don't need to be signed for your music to be heard. Which helps.

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

It's a tuff questions. I guess every DJ gauges it on the vibe when they play. I have a lot of favourites. But my most recent was at code in New Zealand with buddy DJ/producer Katt Niall. Not knowing what to expect as it was my first gig there. I was playing music I never played before and it was going nuts and the best part was that no one knew who we were.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Another tuff one. I have a lot. Probably Deadmau5. I loved how he opened up his set up to the whole world. I really picked up some tips from him. He is the best sounding dance artist of all time and I believe a lot of people learnt a lot of stuff from his music.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

Just finished a couple of remixes which are just coming out now. I am back in the studio working on some originals with Katt Niall and a couple of other collaborations. Hopefully to have a few ready for the next summer.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

A big mash of genres, quick pace, party vibe in the club.

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Rihanna & Calvin Harris - We Found Love. Very summery song.
