Monday Mix Up #10 w/ Mat Cant (Revolver, Scattermusic)

Interview: Kid's Table

DJ Name: Mat Cant
Label: Scattermusic
Residencies: The Late Show @ Revolver Upstairs, Cant Say @ Miss Libertines, Get Low @ Revolver Upstairs, Favela Rock @ Miss Libertines
Years in industry: 8
Favourite catch phrase:  [Click Here]

KT: For everyone out there looking to get into deejayin'; how did you first start and what was your 'big break'?

First started DJing back in 2003 when the DJ at the club I was working in quit and they needed someone. I was a glass runner at the time but always loved music so I said I would do it, the rest is history. I don't encourage people becoming a glass runner just to become a DJ though.

KT: What advice can you give to any aspiring deejays out there that want to make their hobby into a career?

Stick to it, believe in what you're doing and don't listen to people that try and tell you that you can't do it. Making a career out of anything in the music industry is never easy and involves a lot of work so don't think things will happen overnight.

KT: What has been your favourite gig/venue to play at and why?

Easily The Late Show @ Revolver Upstairs, it's an amazing venue and I'm super lucky to have held a residency there for 3 years now. It's the only venue in the country that I've been comfortable to play whatever I like and have the crowd follow me.

KT: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

Internationally I would say Toddla T, early Diplo, Scottie B and The Heatwave. Locally dudes like Paz, Scattermish, Ransom, Lewis Cancut, anyone pushing the boundaries and keeping electronic music evolving.

KT: What projects are you working on at the moment?

I've got 2 EPs on the go at the moment that I'm trying to get out this summer, one club based one and another one with vocalists on more of a pop tip I suppose. Not pop like GaGa, but pop as in the sense of it being commercially viable for radio play etc. On top of that I've got a couple of remixes on the go for Top Billin, Klub Kids and working on the re-launch of my Get Low radio show once the new Loose Joints site is ready.

KT: For anyone who hasn't caught you live yet; what can they expect to see?

Come along and find out ;-)

KT: What's the first song that pops into your head when you think 'Getting Tropical' and why?

Tropical seemed to be a really 'it' word for a while and was widely overused but when I think tropical it's hard to go past 'Warako Musica - Paris Tropical (Pharoah Zap Edit)'
